Rom is the younger brother of Quark and the father of Nog. For several seasons of DS9, Rom worked as a waiter in his brother’s bar before becoming an engineer then succeeding Zek as the Grand Nagus of Ferenginar. He later married, Leeta at the end of Season 5, a Bajoran woman who worked as a Dabo girl in Quark’s bar and the two then left the station to reside in Ferenginar to assume his command with Leeta by his side

After several years of emotional abuse from his older brother Quark who exploited him too many uncounted times, Rom then left the bar which he hoped he would inherent one day from his brother to start working as an Engineer in the station. Rom was often with poor business skills but exhibited intelligence which usually was overshadowed by his lack of self confidence however he soon came in handy during the Dominion’s occupation of the Station when he played an important role being part of the small resistance cell against the Dominion, coming up with the idea of using a self-replicating mines to block the wormhole thus stopping the Dominion from having additional reinforcements from the Gamma Quadrant during the early times of the Dominion War
Most significant episodes of Rom are: Bar Association where Rom formed a union of Quark’s employees after Quark had cut their wages, influenced by one of O’Brien’s ancestors then challenging the FCA until their demands were fully met. Also, Little Green Men where Rom, Nog and Quark were sent back to Earth in 1947 and were mistaken for invaders until they were able to escape, an incident which became known later as the Roswell Incident
Despite all their differences, Rom and Quark remained close and Quark risked his life saving Rom when the latter was sanctioned by the Dominion to be executed later for his role in the resistance cell. Quark too had a strong relationship with his nephew Nog, caring for him and saving his life during Episode The Siege of AR-558. Rom encouraged his son’s admission into Starfleet, much to Quark’s disapproval. Rom also had an affectionate and close relationship with his mother, Ishka
Rom was often described by many of DS9 crew as not behaving as a typical Ferengi, esp when proposing to Leeta then marrying her without her signing the Ferengi pre-nuptial agreement
