Played by: Aron Eisenberg
Species: Ferengi
Nog is the first Ferengi to enter Starfleet. He is the only son of Rom, Quark’s brother and Jake Sisko’s dearest friend. He served abroad DS9 and USS Defiant during the many important battles of the Dominion War
For more information, please read Nog’s page on Memory Alpha.org: http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Nog
Nog is one of the many DS9 characters that underwent some deep character development throughout the series
Most significant episodes of Nog are: The Siege of AR-558 where he lost a leg during a battle & It’s Only a Paper Moon which highlights he adjustment, his path to recovery of him being in the Station again after losing his leg
DS9 has shown the Ferengi, just like the Cardassians, Bajorans etc… etc… in a more mature, different shades of Grey than other Trek Series who often portrayed them first in an evil yet comedic one dimensional characters
Nog was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade In one of Benjamin Sisko’s last official acts as the commanding officer of DS9
Nog is one of the many recurring characters of Deep Space Nine who added a unique strength to a series that never solely depended on the main characters much like the other Trek Series
In regard to Episode “The Siege of AR-558“, “According to Ronald D. Moore, in the original story, Nog was to lose both his legs, but Rick Berman argued for a less severe loss, which is why Nog lost only one leg. Nevertheless, Aron Eisenberg is a big fan of this episode and the effect it had on the character; “Nog had been a gung-ho soldier who thought nothing could happen to him. He wanted to be Starfleet, and be the best because only the best could become captain. So no matter what he saw, no matter how many people he saw die, he was like a train that just kept going. Then he got hit. I played him as if he were in shock, but the first thought that would come into his head is, ‘Oh my God, I could die.‘” Courtesy of Memory Alpha.org
A personal favorite observation of Episode “The Siege of AR-558” was how Quark questioned Nog’s admiration of the Human Starfleet officers whom eventually began to respect Nog during and after the battle, the so many Quark “Shades of Grey” moments where he would care, defend his nephew of any harm and question Benjamin’s sisko firmly, of him not caring enough because Nog is not Jake Sisko, his son lying there then losing his leg and finally Nog’s own realization of the horror of war, the so many great moments of DS9′s portrayal of the Ferengi
Aron Eisenberg has said of Nog, “The thing that I thought they did so well with Nog was that they didn’t make him perfect. He joined Starfleet with the determination and the tenacity to succeed, but he didn’t always make the right decision, but he always kept trying again. And I always felt that Nog was one of the most human characters on that show.” Courtesy of Memory Alpha.org
