DS9 Stories/News: Odo/Kira Key Moments (2)

 The Sound of Her Voice

Okay, I admit it – this is here for one reason and one reason alone – pure eye candy! Who could resist Kira in a flapper dress and Odo in white tie and tails?

Tears of the Prophets

In an example of Odo’s ongoing struggle to understand the sometimes subtle nuances of humanoid relationships, a minor disagreement with Kira (one which she’s already forgotten about) leads Odo to believe their fledgling romance is over. This *sweet* scene (that word keeps popping up!) of their reconciliation prompts Odo to remark, “You know, Nerys, observing humanoid relationships and being in one are two very different things.” To which Kira replies “Like night and Day!”

 Images in the Sand

Season 7 opens with Odo playfully addressing Kira by her rank – Colonel (and about time she got that promotion!). She’s been running the station for three months while Sisko is on earth, dealing with his emotional fallout over Jadzia’s death. The orbs are dark, the Prophets are silent, the Emissary is gone and the Pagh wraith cult is gaining strength. Plus the Dominion is  still out there, ready to deal the Alpha Quadrant a death blow. Not a happy time on DS9

Odo, the man who perennially sees a dark cloud even on the sunniest of days, tries to cheer Kira up. “There’s always hope, Nerys.”

Kira: “Since when did you become an optimist?”

Odo: “It must have been that day in front of Quark’s when we kissed for the first time.”

Kira: “That was some kiss, wasn’t it?”

Odo: “Changed my life.”

                . . . sigh . . .

 Shadows and Symbols

To add to Kira’s many troubles, the Romulans have secreted weapons to the Bajoran moon they requested to use as a hospital complex, a clear violation of their agreement. Kira is planning to command a squadron of Bajoran sub-impulse vessels to form a blockade against the approaching Romulan warbirds. Clearly a suicide mission. Odo, brooking no argument, informs Kira that he will be on that ship with her. “I was hoping for a long and happy relationship, but I’ll take short and exciting.”

Throughout it’s seven year run, we have seen Odo in this familiar position . . .

The strong wall at Kira’s back. . .

While not ground breaking in terms of Odo’s and Kira’s relationship, the following scenes are touching, funny, romantic reminders of why we love this wonderful couple.

Equalibrium

In the episode teaser, Captain Sisko has Odo, who can neither taste or smell, nor needs to eat, whisking a souffle. Smiling, Kira approaches him.

Odo: “You find something amusing, Major?”

Kira: “It’s just that you look so . . . cute!”

 Meridian

Another opening teaser – Odo and Kira are in the replimat when Kira is approached by an unsavory alien (Tirol) who annoyed her the previous night in Quark’s bar and who has designs on her. Attempting to dissuade him, Kira grabs Odo’s hand and proclaims him her lover! Shocked by her words and actions, Odo quickly recovers and gamely plays along, including calling her ‘sweetheart.’ A clueless Kira has no idea of the implications of her farce.

A disappointed Tirol leaves and Kira returns to Ops leaving Odo to contemplate the scene that just took place. He lifts the hand she held and stares at it in wonder. Any doubt he won’t be washing that hand for a while???

 The Reckoning

The episode that immediately follows “His Way.” The opening teaser gives us a playful Odo and Kira reveling in the fluttery happiness of a new romance. To quote Ezri, *very sweet!*

There’s a serious side to “The Reckoning” in which Kira’s life is endangered by the Prophets, who are using her body as in instrument to fight a ‘good vs. evil’ battle with the Pagh Wraiths. Given the chance to expel the Prophet from Kira’s body, Odo refuses, insisting Kira would gladly give herself up to her Prophets and that he must respect her wishes and beliefs, even if it means her death. It shows us a maturity in their young relationship that is the natural outgrowth of years of friendship, and also shows us how Odo has learned a lesson from “Children of Time.” Then, Odo’s Gaia counterpart sacrificed the lives of the Gaia colony to save Kira’s life. Now he chooses to respect her wishes despite the danger to her life.

DS9 Stories/News: Reason #42 Why I Love DS9 – The Magnificent Ferengi

“A child, a moron, a failure, and a psychopath. Quite a little team you’ve put together.”

There are many reasons why I love Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and why it remains my favorite of the Star Trek franchise.

Reason #42: The Magnificent Ferengi

Over the years there have been several remakes and homages to The Seven Samurai, most notably The Magnificent Seven. Never has a more unlikely group of heroes been assembled than in “The Magnificent Frerengi.”

After Quark (Armin Shimerman) learns his mother (Cecily Adams) has been kidnapped by the Dominion the Grand Nagus orders him to do everything to get her back. Dismissing the plan of hiring mercenaries to retrieve his Moogie, Quark stumbles upon the less than brilliant plan of putting together his own team comprised completely of Feregni.

The team includes Quark, Rom (Max Grodénchik), Nog (Aron Eisenberg), Gaila (Josh Pais), Brunt (Jeffrey Combs), and a Ferengi liquidator known as Leck (Hamilton Camp). When the group’s training in the holosuite ends in disaster Quark decides to use his Federation resources to arrange a prisoner transfer and trade a captured Vorta (Christopher Shea) for his mother.

Even the transfer doesn’t go according to plan as the Ferengi accidentally kill their Vorta before the exchange. Their solution is rather morbid, reanimating the corpse to appear alive using neural stimulators and a remote control, but it’s very amusing.

Of all the Quark episodes this is one of the best as this rag tag team somehow actually finds a way to complete their mission. It’s also memorable for casting Iggy Pop as the Dominion commander in control of the transfer
